BRAND PARTNERSHIPS

Participaction

Hal Johnson called Participaction, a non-profit organization, co-funded by the government and corporate sector, designed to promote fitness to Canadians. All we knew about Participaction was what you probably remember too, the public service announcement which told us that a 65-year-old Swede was in better shape than a 30-year-old Canadian. But after one look at their brochures showing all types of people enjoying fitness and eating healthier, we knew we were at the right place.

About

Hal Johnson was born on June 14, 1956, and grew up in Toronto. He was an athlete from a young age, serving as captain for his high school’s hockey, baseball, basketball, and football teams, and was recognized as athlete of the year. He attended the University of Colorado on a baseball scholarship, where he earned a business degree and became an all-star first baseman, representing Canada at the World Baseball Championship. After his athletic career, Johnson sought to pursue sports broadcasting but encountered racial barriers. These experiences, alongside those of his parents, motivated him to create inclusive media content. Joanne McLeod was born on September 18, 1958, in Scarborough, Ontario, and was adopted at eight months old. She developed an early interest in physical activity, excelling in street hockey, tag, and running. Her high school physical education teacher, an Olympic hurdler, encouraged her to join a track club, leading her to become a four-time National and seven-time Provincial hurdle champion. She represented Canada in various international track meets, including the Pacific Conference Games, World Cup, and Commonwealth Games. Prior to her career in television, McLeod worked in the insurance industry to support her athletic pursuits.

Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod met in a gym and recognized a shared vision for a fitness show that would be different from existing programs. They self-funded the pilot for ‘BodyBreak’ in 1988, which faced rejection from over 40 organizations, partly due to concerns about showcasing an interracial couple as equal partners. Undeterred, they secured initial funding from ParticipACTION, a non-profit organization promoting fitness to Canadians, leading to the production of 65 segments. ‘BodyBreak’ first aired on CBC on April 28, 1989. When ParticipACTION ended their partnership in 1991, Johnson and McLeod continued production independently, investing their own resources and later collaborating with Health Canada for the Vitality project from 1993 to 1995. Their work received an Award of Excellence in 1994. In 1995, Life Network commissioned a 13-episode half-hour television series, with a focus on including individuals with disabilities.

Expanding the ‘BodyBreak’ brand, they ventured into retail with the ‘BodyBreak Ab Master’ in 1996, which became the number one selling abdominal product in Canada with over 450,000 units sold. They later distributed a line of fitness equipment to major retailers like Wal-Mart and Sears. In 1998, ‘BodyBreak’ became a syndicated radio show. Johnson and McLeod have continued to produce short segments, workout videos, 30-minute shows, and a book. They also engage in speaking engagements and charity events, and in 2013, they competed on ‘The Amazing Race Canada’, finishing in sixth place. Their deliberate approach to inclusive casting in ‘BodyBreak’ segments has been a core principle, influencing public perception and acceptance, a commitment highlighted by Johnson’s 2020 video “How We Battled Racism.”
