Hugh Dancy

Hugh Michael Horace Dancy was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, on June 19, 1975. He was raised in Newcastle-under-Lyme. His mother, Sarah Ann Dancy, works in academic publishing, and his father, Jonathan Peter Dancy, is a philosophy professor. He was educated at Edenhurst Preparatory School, the Dragon School, and Winchester College before studying English at St Peter’s College, Oxford. After graduation, Dancy moved to London, where he began his acting career with roles in television series such as ‘Trial & Retribution’ (1997), ‘Dangerfield’ (1995), ‘Kavanagh QC’ (1995), and ‘Cold Feet’ (1997).

Dancy gained early recognition for his lead role as David Copperfield in the 2000 television film adaptation of ‘David Copperfield’. His career continued to develop with appearances in Ridley Scott’s war drama ‘Black Hawk Down’ (2001) as Medic Kurt Schmid, and prominent roles in films like ‘Tempo’ (2003) and ‘The Sleeping Dictionary’ (2003). He portrayed Prince Charmont in ‘Ella Enchanted’ (2004) opposite Anne Hathaway and Sir Galahad in ‘King Arthur’ (2004). His performance as the Earl of Essex in the HBO mini-series ‘Elizabeth I’ (2005) earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. On stage, Dancy has performed in several notable productions, including ‘Journey’s End’ (2007) on Broadway and ‘Venus in Fur’ (2010-2011), for which he received critical acclaim.

A significant turning point in Dancy’s career came with his role as criminal profiler Will Graham in the NBC series ‘Hannibal’ (2013–2015), which garnered critical acclaim and numerous award nominations, including a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 2015. He further explored complex television roles as Cal Roberts in the Hulu original series ‘The Path’ (2016–2018), where he also served as a producer. More recently, Dancy joined the cast of NBC’s revival of ‘Law & Order’ (2022–present) as Senior Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price, a role he has continued to play across multiple seasons and crossover episodes.
