Born on February 22, 1963, in Lautoka, Fiji, Vijay Singh turned professional in 1982. He began his career on the Asia Golf Circuit, winning the 1984 Malaysian PGA Championship. However, his early career faced a setback when he was banned from the Asia Golf Circuit in 1985 due to scorecard irregularities. Singh then competed on the Safari Circuit and European Tour, securing several victories. In 1988, he won the Nigerian Open, marking his first success on the Safari Circuit, and later qualified for the European Tour, where he won his first title at the Volvo Open Championship in 1989. These early successes established his presence in professional golf before his move to the PGA Tour.
Singh earned his PGA Tour membership in 1993, winning the Buick Classic in a playoff and being named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Throughout the 1990s, he achieved consistent success, securing wins like the Phoenix Open (1995) and the Memorial Tournament (1997). A significant milestone occurred in 1998 when he won his first major championship, the PGA Championship. This was followed by a Masters Tournament victory in 2000. The year 2004 marked a career high, with Singh winning nine times, including his second PGA Championship, and reaching the No. 1 position in the Official World Golf Ranking, ending Tiger Woods’ long reign. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006, recognizing his extensive achievements.
After turning 40, Singh continued to achieve notable success, including 22 PGA Tour wins, surpassing Sam Snead’s record. He won the FedEx Cup in 2008, solidifying his status as a leading figure in professional golf. More recently, Singh has competed on the PGA Tour Champions, where he has also achieved multiple victories, including the Constellation Senior Players Championship in 2018. His career highlights include 34 PGA Tour wins, 13 European Tour wins, and 5 Asian Tour wins, accumulating over $71 million in career earnings. Singh’s dedication to his craft is evident in his rigorous training regimen.
