Hugh Dennis

Peter Hugh Dennis was born on February 13, 1962, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. He was educated at University College School in London and later attended St John’s College, Cambridge, where he studied Geographical Tripos. During his time at Cambridge, he joined the Footlights comedy club, where he first met his long-term comedy partner, Steve Punt. After graduating with a first-class honours degree, Dennis initially worked for Unilever in the marketing department for six years, gaining experience as a brand manager for Lynx deodorant, while performing comedy in the evenings. His transition to a full-time comedy career was marked by the success of “The Mary Whitehouse Experience.”

Dennis has established a prominent career spanning several decades, notable for his roles as a panellist on “Mock the Week” from 2005 to 2022 and as Pete Brockman in the sitcom “Outnumbered” from 2007 to 2014, with subsequent specials. He has also appeared in “My Hero” (2000-2006) as Dr. Piers Crispin, and in “Not Going Out” (2014-2023) as Toby. His acting credits extend to film, including a cameo as Dr. Hardy in the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” (2021). Beyond acting and panel shows, Dennis has hosted factual programs such as “The Great British Dig” since 2020, showcasing his diverse interests.

His writing contributions include “The Mary Whitehouse Experience,” “The Imaginatively Titled Punt & Dennis Show,” and numerous episodes of “The Now Show” and “It’s Been a Bad Week” on BBC Radio. Dennis’s work has earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Male Comedy Performance for “Outnumbered” in 2010 and a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award for Light Entertainment for “Canned Carrott” in 1993. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Northampton in 2008, followed by becoming Chancellor of the University of Winchester in 2024.
