About

Hugh John Mungo Grant was born on September 9, 1960, in Hammersmith, London, United Kingdom. His mother, Fyvola Susan (MacLean), worked as a teacher for over 30 years, and his father, James Murray Grant, was an artist and carpet salesman. Grant’s early education included Hogarth Primary School, St Peter’s Primary School, Wetherby School, and Latymer Upper School. He excelled in sports, playing rugby, cricket, and football. He received a scholarship to New College, Oxford, in 1979, where he studied English literature and became involved in student drama. He made his feature film debut in “Privileged” (1982) while still a student.

Grant gained significant attention with his role in the Merchant-Ivory film “Maurice” (1987), for which he received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. His career breakthrough arrived with the leading role as Charles in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994), earning him a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Film Award for Best Actor. Throughout the 1990s, he solidified his reputation in romantic comedies, starring in films like “Notting Hill” (1999) alongside Julia Roberts, and establishing Simian Films Limited, his own production company. His performances in “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001) as Daniel Cleaver and “About a Boy” (2002) as Will Freeman were critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

In later career stages, Grant transitioned to character roles, moving away from romantic comedies. Notable performances include his roles as St. Clair Bayfield in “Florence Foster Jenkins” (2016), Phoenix Buchanan in “Paddington 2” (2017), and Jeremy Thorpe in the BBC miniseries “A Very English Scandal” (2018), the latter two earning him BAFTA nominations. He also appeared in Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen” (2019) and the HBO miniseries “The Undoing” (2020), which garnered him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. More recently, he featured in “Wonka” (2023) and the horror film “Heretic” (2024), demonstrating his continued versatility as an actor.
