Hunter Schafer, born on December 31, 1998, in Trenton, New Jersey, is an American actress, model, and activist. Her early life saw her family move between New Jersey, Arizona, and North Carolina. Schafer came to public attention in 2016 when she became a plaintiff in a lawsuit against North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, widely known as the “bathroom bill.” This activism led to her being named to Teen Vogue’s “21 under 21” list in 2017. Her early artistic talents included watercolor painting and clothing design, skills she initially planned to pursue in art college before pivoting to modeling and acting.
Schafer’s modeling career began shortly after high school in 2017, signing with Elite Model Management. She quickly gained recognition for her unique look, working with various high-profile brands such as Dior, Marc Jacobs, Converse, Gucci, Helmut Lang, Versus Versace, and Miu Miu. Her transition to acting marked a significant turning point in her career. In 2019, Schafer made her acting debut as Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Emmy-Award winning series “Euphoria.” This role garnered her critical acclaim and established her as an emerging talent in the entertainment industry. She co-wrote a special episode of “Euphoria” and received nominations for a Shorty Award, an MTV Movie & TV Award, and a Dorian Award for her performance.
Following her success in “Euphoria,” Schafer expanded her filmography, starring in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (2023) as Tigris Snow, a role for which her performance was well-received. She also took on her first lead film role in Tilman Singer’s horror movie “Cuckoo” (2024), and appeared in Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Kinds of Kindness” (2024). Beyond entertainment, Schafer has continued to engage in significant brand partnerships, serving as a global brand ambassador for Shiseido Makeup since 2020, and as a house ambassador for Prada since 2021. In 2023, she became the new face of Mugler’s Angel perfume. Schafer is also set to appear in upcoming projects such as David Lowery’s “Mother Mary,” the video game “OD,” and the Amazon science fiction television series “Blade Runner 2099.”
