Ilia Malinin, born on December 2, 2004, in Fairfax, Virginia, began his skating career at the age of six, influenced by his parents, Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, both former Olympic figure skaters for Uzbekistan. His grandfather, a former figure skater for the USSR, also played a role in his early training. Malinin’s foundational years included notable successes: in 2016, he became the U.S. national juvenile champion; in 2017, the U.S. national intermediate champion; and in 2019, the U.S. national novice bronze medalist. His junior international debut saw him win gold at the Philadelphia Summer International in 2019, followed by two Junior Grand Prix gold medals in 2021 in France and Austria.
Malinin’s senior career commenced in the 2021-22 season. After securing second place at the 2022 U.S. Championships and being named an alternate for the Beijing Winter Olympics, he won gold at the 2022 World Junior Championships. A turning point arrived in September 2022 when Malinin became the first skater to successfully land the quadruple Axel in an international competition at the U.S. International Classic, a feat recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. This achievement solidified his reputation for technical mastery, earning him the nickname “QuadGod.” He continued to accumulate accolades, including a bronze medal at the 2023 ISU Figure Skating World Championships and back-to-back gold medals in 2024 and 2025, marking the fastest progression from junior to senior world champion in 26 years.
Throughout his career, Malinin has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform high-level quadruple jumps, eventually becoming the first skater to successfully land all six types of quadruple jumps in a single program during the 2024-25 Grand Prix Final. He also incorporates unique elements like on-ice backflips and his signature “Raspberry Twist” into his routines. Off the ice, Malinin is a student at George Mason University and enjoys a range of hobbies including skateboarding, parkour, drawing, and video games.
