United States Jake Guentzel is a professional ice hockey left winger for the Tampa Bay Lightning, recognized for his scoring ability and contributions to championship teams.
The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired forward Jake Guentzel from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. He signed a 7-year, $63,000,000 contract.
Born on October 6, 1994, in Omaha, Nebraska, Jake Guentzel embarked on his professional ice hockey career after being selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft. Prior to his NHL debut, he played three seasons with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks, where he was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team in 2014 and the NCHC Second All-Star Team in 2016. Moving to the American Hockey League (AHL), Guentzel joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in March 2016, leading the team in playoff scoring with 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) in 10 games. His AHL performance earned him a spot on the 2017 AHL All-Rookie Team and an invitation to the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic.
Guentzel’s impact in the National Hockey League began swiftly, scoring two goals in his debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins on November 21, 2016. He became an integral part of the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 2017, leading all postseason scorers with 13 goals and tying the playoff rookie record for points with 21. His playoff achievements included a hat trick and an overtime game-winning goal in the same game during the 2017 Eastern Conference First Round. He continued to build on this success, achieving a 40-goal season and 76 points in 82 games during the 2018-19 season, followed by signing a five-year contract with the Penguins in December 2018. Guentzel’s consistent performance also led to his selection for the NHL All-Star Game in both 2020 and 2022.
After a successful tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he recorded two 40-goal seasons, Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2024. He played 17 games with the Hurricanes, contributing 8 goals and 17 assists for 25 points. In June 2024, Guentzel was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he signed a seven-year, $63 million contract. He was also named to the United States roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off during the 2024-25 season, where he represented his country and contributed with goals and assists, further solidifying his standing as a prominent figure in professional ice hockey.
