In a career that has spanned nearly half a century, Oscar-nominated actor James Cromwell has appeared in several of the classic films and television series of our time. He was in The Green Mile, LA Confidential, Spider-Man 3, The Artist, Boardwalk Empire, and many more. He was nominated for Primetime Emmys for his work on Succession, ER, Six Feet Under, and RKO 281. He deservedly won one in 2013 — Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie — for his portrayal of Arthur Arden in American Horror Story. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1996 for playing Farmer Hoggett in the classic children’s film, Babe. More recently, he has appeared in series such as Operation Buffalo and The Family. A fierce advocate of animal rights and veganism, he superglued his hand the counter of a Manhattan Starbucks in May 2022, protesting at the extra charge for plant-based milk.
Cromwell’s first television acting break came with an episode of The Rockford Files back in 1974. He built up his resume over the following years with appearances in everything from Little House on the Prairie to Dallas. In the mid-late 1990s, he hit a rich vein of form with his Oscar-nominated performance in Babe soon followed by roles in LA Confidential, The People vs. Larry Flynt, The Green Mile, Snow Falling on Cedars, various Star Trek shows, and much more.
In the 21st century, Cromwell has continued in the same vein, tackling everything from portraying Prince Phillip in The Queen to voicing Disney villains.
