Born on January 6, 1975, in Ettrick, Virginia, James Alfred Farrior developed his athletic foundation at Matoaca High School. He was recognized as a Parade High School All-America selection and Virginia’s Group AA Co-Offensive Player of the Year in his senior year. During this time, he excelled at both fullback and linebacker, demonstrating versatility with 78 tackles, 11 sacks, five blocked kicks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions on defense, alongside rushing for over 1,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, and gaining 340 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on offense.
Farrior continued his collegiate football career at the University of Virginia, playing for the Virginia Cavaliers. He became a prominent defensive player, ranking third on the school’s all-time tackle list with 381 career tackles. In his senior season in 1996, he achieved first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors, recording 107 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7 passes defensed, and 6.5 sacks. He earned All-ACC second-team honors as a junior in 1995 with 122 tackles and an interception, and an honorable mention as a sophomore in 1994, contributing 100 tackles and 4 interceptions. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Professionally, Farrior was drafted eighth overall in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. After five seasons with the Jets, during which he became a starter in 2001 with 142 tackles, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002. With the Steelers, he transitioned to inside linebacker, a position where his career flourished. He was instrumental in two Super Bowl victories (XL and XLIII) and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice (2004, 2008). Farrior earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2004 and second-team All-Pro in 2008. Over his 15-season NFL career, he accumulated 1,440 total tackles, 35.5 sacks, 18 forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, and 11 interceptions. In 2016, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2020, he became a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor. He is also actively involved with the James Farrior Foundation, focusing on community support through programs like Impact 51, the Farrior Scholarship Fund, and Families in Crisis.
