About

James Francis Gunn Jr. was born on August 5, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri, into a large Catholic family of Irish and Czech descent. His early exposure to low-budget films and his childhood hobby of making 8mm zombie movies with his brothers ignited his passion for filmmaking. He pursued a rock and roll career with his band “The Icons,” releasing one album, “Mom, We Like It Here on Earth,” while also working as an orderly and contributing comic strips to underground newspapers. Gunn later returned to academia, earning a B.A. from Saint Louis University and an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. During his graduate studies, he began his professional career with Troma Studios, America’s leading B-movie production company.

At Troma Studios, Gunn wrote and produced the cult classic “Tromeo and Juliet” (1996) and co-authored “All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger.” Following a “spiritual awakening” in Cannes in 1997, he moved to Los Angeles. His career in mainstream Hollywood began with screenwriting credits for “Scooby-Doo” (2002) and its sequel “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” (2004), as well as the remake of “Dawn of the Dead” (2004). This period marked a significant milestone as he became the first screenwriter to have two films top the box office in consecutive weeks. He made his directorial debut with the horror-comedy “Slither” (2006), which garnered critical acclaim. He continued to explore the superhero genre with “Super” (2010), a dark comedy.

His career significantly ascended after co-writing and directing Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014) and its sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017), both achieving critical and commercial success. These films solidified his unique directorial style. In 2022, Gunn was appointed co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, where he oversees all film and television projects for the DC Universe (DCU). His work for DC includes creating the series “Creature Commandos” (2024) and writing and directing the upcoming film “Superman” (2025). He also wrote and directed the HBO Max series “Peacemaker” (2022–present) and the Disney+ special “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” (2022). Throughout his career, Gunn has been noted for his use of consistent collaborators and a distinct narrative voice.
