Jasprit Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. His early life was marked by financial challenges following the death of his father when he was five. Despite this, Bumrah cultivated his cricketing talent, particularly his distinctive fast bowling action and ability to deliver accurate yorkers. He first gained recognition playing for his school team, Nirman High School, where his mother served as vice-principal. His unique bowling style quickly caught the attention of scouts, leading to his Under-19 debut for the Gujarat state team in December 2011.
Bumrah made his Twenty20 (T20) debut for Gujarat in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where his performance caught the eye of John Wright, then head coach of the Mumbai Indians. This led to his signing with the Mumbai Indians for the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking a significant step in his professional career. He played a crucial role in Mumbai Indians’ five IPL title wins (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020). His international debut came in January 2016 in both One Day International (ODI) and T20I formats during India’s tour of Australia where he was the highest wicket-taker in the T20 series. He went on to make his Test debut against South Africa in January 2018, defying initial perceptions of him as primarily a T20 specialist.
Throughout his career, Bumrah has achieved several significant milestones. He became the first bowler to achieve the number one ranking in the ICC men’s player rankings across all three formats of the game. He was a crucial member of the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament for taking 15 wickets with an average economy of 4.17. He also holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs in an over in Tests (35 runs) against Stuart Broad in 2022. Internationally, he was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2018–19 Test series in Australia, a feat that helped India secure its first Test series win in that country. In 2019, he became the third Indian bowler to take a Test hat-trick, against West Indies.
