Jeffrey Allan Anderson was born on April 21, 1970, in Connecticut, and grew up in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. His early life involved attending Henry Hudson Regional High School, where he became acquainted with aspiring filmmaker Kevin Smith. This connection would later prove significant for his acting career. After high school, while employed at AT&T, Anderson’s friend Kevin Smith was developing his debut film, “Clerks.” Initially, Anderson humorously auditioned for the role of ‘Jay.’ However, Smith was impressed by his audition, leading to Anderson being cast in the lead role of Randal Graves. This character, a foul-mouthed and apathetic video store employee, became a defining part of his career, earning him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance.
Anderson has largely confined his acting work to Kevin Smith-directed films following his breakout role in “Clerks” (1994). He reprised the role of Randal in “Clerks II” (2006) and later in “Clerks III” (2022). Between these projects, he took on directorial and writing duties for his own film, “Now You Know” (2002), where he also starred as Gil. His work as a director and writer showcased another dimension of his creative abilities within the film industry. Anderson also appeared in other Smith films such as “Dogma” (1999), “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (2001), and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” (2008), where he played Deacon.
His career also includes voice acting roles, such as Smug in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (2011) and Randal in the video game “Randal’s Monday” (2014) and “Clerks: The Animated Series” (2000-2001). Although initially hesitant to return for “Clerks III” in 2017, Anderson ultimately agreed to reprise his iconic role for the 2022 film, a project that concluded a long-standing saga. Beyond his film endeavors, Anderson has a personal life marked by his marriage to Barbara Jacques in 2009. He publicly shared insights into his life, including relocating out of Los Angeles to a quieter community in a 2010 SModcast episode with Kevin Smith.
