About

Jameel Joseph Farah, known professionally as Jamie Farr, was born on July 1, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio. His father, Samuel Farah, an immigrant from the Beqaa Valley area of Lebanon, owned a grocery store, and his mother, Jamelia Farah, a Lebanese American seamstress, raised him in a diverse neighborhood. Farr’s early interest in acting manifested at age 11 when he won a local competition. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1952 and subsequently enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. It was there that he was noticed by an MGM talent scout, leading to a screen test for the film “Blackboard Jungle” (1955), where he played Santini. He was credited as Jameel Farah until 1959.

Farr’s career began with bit parts, including a role in “The Blackboard Jungle” and recurring appearances on “The Red Skelton Show” starting in 1955. His career was interrupted by military service from 1957 to 1959, where he served in the Special Services. Upon his return, he initially worked as a writer for Red Skelton to support his family after his father’s death. Over the next decade, Farr appeared in various television shows such as “The Danny Kaye Show,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and “My Three Sons,” and films like “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965) and “No Time for Sergeants.” A pivotal turn came in October 1972 when he was cast for a single day’s work on “M*A*S*H” as Corporal Maxwell Klinger, a role that would define his career. Farr joined the main cast in season 4 as a series regular in 1975.

His portrayal of Klinger, a cross-dressing Lebanese-American soldier from Toledo attempting to secure a Section 8 discharge, resonated with audiences. The character’s Toledo origins allowed Farr to integrate personal touches, such as references to Tony Packo’s Cafe and the Toledo Mud Hens. As the series progressed, Klinger’s character evolved, becoming company clerk and gradually abandoning cross-dressing, a change Farr requested to avoid his children being teased. After “M*A*S*H” concluded in 1983, Farr reprised his role in the spin-off “AfterMASH” for two seasons. He also ventured into Broadway, playing Nathan Detroit in “Guys and Dolls” at age 60, a role he had long aspired to, and appeared in numerous other stage productions throughout his career. Outside of acting, Farr hosted the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, an LPGA tour stop, for 28 years, raising money for children’s charities.
