James Adam Belushi was born on June 15, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Agnes Demetri Samaras and Adam Anastos Belushi, a restaurant owner. His father was an Albanian immigrant, and his mother was also of Albanian descent. The third of four children, Jim grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, alongside his older brother John Belushi. After a high school teacher noticed his improvisational skills and encouraged him to join the drama club, he pursued acting. He attended the College of DuPage and Southern Illinois University, graduating with a degree in Speech and Theater Arts.
Belushi began his career in 1977 by joining Chicago’s Second City improv troupe, where he performed for three years. His improvisational background proved formative, leading to early television roles in the pilot “Who’s Watching the Kids” (1978) and the series “Working Stiffs” (1979). In 1983, he gained national attention by joining the cast of “Saturday Night Live” for two years, following in his brother’s footsteps. His performance in “About Last Night…” (1986), reprising a role he originated in David Mamet’s play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” further established his presence in Hollywood.
Throughout his career, Belushi has built a substantial filmography encompassing over 160 acting credits, spanning various genres. Notable film roles include “Red Heat” (1988), “K-9” (1989), and “Joe Somebody” (2001). On television, he starred as the titular character in the popular sitcom “According to Jim” (2001–2009), serving also as an executive producer. More recently, Belushi has embraced a new venture as a cannabis farmer, chronicled in the Discovery Channel series “Growing Belushi” (2020–2023). He also continues to perform music as Brother Zee with Dan Aykroyd and The Blues Brothers Band.
