Jim Caldwell

Born on January 16, 1955, in Beloit, Wisconsin, James Caldwell began his football journey as a four-year starter at defensive back for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes from 1973 to 1976. During his freshman year in 1973, he established an Iowa single-season record with five blocked kicks. His coaching career commenced shortly after college, starting as a graduate assistant at Iowa in 1977. He then held various assistant coaching roles at institutions such as Southern Illinois, Northwestern, Colorado, Louisville, and Penn State, where he served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. In 1993, Caldwell made history as the first African-American head football coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) when he took the helm at Wake Forest University. In his eight years at Wake Forest, he posted a 26-63 record, guiding the Demon Deacons to their first bowl victory in 1999 at the Aloha Bowl.

Caldwell’s transition to the NFL began in 2001 as the quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tony Dungy. He followed Dungy to the Indianapolis Colts in 2002, where he spent seven seasons, contributing to a Super Bowl XLI victory as Assistant Head Coach and Quarterbacks Coach. In 2009, Caldwell was named the head coach of the Colts, achieving a remarkable 14-2 record in his debut season and leading the team to Super Bowl XLIV. After his tenure with the Colts, he joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2012, initially as quarterbacks coach, and was promoted to offensive coordinator later that year. He played a key role in the Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII victory. In 2014, Caldwell became the head coach of the Detroit Lions, leading them to two playoff appearances in four seasons and finishing with a winning record of 36-28, the best for a non-interim Lions coach since 1972. In 2019, he served as Assistant Head Coach and Quarterbacks Coach for the Miami Dolphins, and currently holds a Senior Assistant position with the Carolina Panthers since 2023.

Throughout his extensive career spanning over four decades, Caldwell has developed a reputation for strong leadership and building competitive teams. His coaching philosophy emphasizes methodical preparation and fostering a disciplined environment. He has been instrumental in the success of numerous players and teams, consistently achieving notable milestones. Beyond the field, Jim and his wife Cheryl established the Jim and Cheryl Caldwell Foundation in 2009, dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for children through digital technology. His hometown of Beloit, Wisconsin, honored him by dedicating the Jim Caldwell Gymnasium, and he has been inducted into both the Beloit High School Hall of Fame (2011) and the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2013).
