Jim Craig

James Downey Craig was born on May 31, 1957. He developed his ice hockey skills early, playing at Oliver Ames High School and later at Massasoit Community College before transferring to Boston University. At Boston University, Craig was a star goaltender, leading the Terriers to the NCAA Division I championship in 1978 and earning NCAA All-Star honors in 1979. His collegiate success positioned him for international competition, leading to his selection for the U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Craig became a central figure in one of the most iconic moments in sports history at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. As the goaltender for the United States, he played a crucial role in the ‘Miracle on Ice,’ where the unheralded U.S. team defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3, making 36 saves on 39 shots. Two days later, he contributed to the team’s 4-2 victory over Finland, securing the Olympic gold medal. This achievement captivated the nation and remains a significant cultural and sporting milestone.

Following his Olympic success, Craig embarked on a professional hockey career. He was drafted by the Atlanta Flames in 1977 and made his NHL debut shortly after the Olympics. He later played for the Boston Bruins and the Minnesota North Stars, though his professional career was impacted by injuries. After retiring from professional hockey in 1984, Craig transitioned into an entrepreneurial role, becoming a motivational speaker, spokesperson, and marketing strategist. He is the president of Gold Medal Strategies, a firm dedicated to helping individuals and organizations define and achieve success. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999, recognizing his significant contributions to ice hockey.
