About

Born in 1968 or 1969, Kevin O’Connor grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, observing various construction projects with his civil engineer father. He pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the College of the Holy Cross in 1990, followed by a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University in 1999. His early career included roles in finance, serving as a vice president in the Sports Finance Group at Fleet Bank and later as a Senior Vice President in the Commercial Real Estate Group at Bank of America. This background in finance provided him with a strong understanding of property and investment, which would later prove relevant to his public-facing career in home improvement.

O’Connor’s career took a significant turn in 2003 when he was approached by the producers of “This Old House.” This occurred after he and his wife, Kathleen, appeared on an episode of “Ask This Old House” where they sought assistance with a wallpaper removal project. This appearance led to him being selected as the new host for “This Old House,” succeeding Steve Thomas. He debuted as host in the Season 25 premiere of “This Old House” and also began hosting “Ask This Old House” and “Inside This Old House.” Beyond his hosting duties, O’Connor extended his involvement with the brand by joining the editorial board of “This Old House” magazine.

In September 2011, O’Connor authored his first book, “The Best Homes from This Old House,” further establishing his expertise and connection to the home renovation industry. He also hosts the podcast “Clearstory” and has hosted shows for DIY and History’s H2. His commitment to practical advice and sharing knowledge from experienced tradespeople has been a hallmark of his career. O’Connor currently resides in Hamilton, Massachusetts, with his wife and three children, in an 1894 Queen Anne Victorian home.
