About

James Magnussen was born on April 11, 1991, in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia. He rose to international prominence in 2011, making a significant impact at the World Championships in Shanghai. At just 20 years old, he secured the gold medal in the 100m freestyle with a time of 47.63 seconds, becoming the first Australian man to achieve this title. Earlier in the same championships, Magnussen played a crucial role in leading the Australian 4 x 100m freestyle relay team to a gold medal victory, marking him as a formidable force in swimming.

His career continued with notable achievements, including multiple medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and Commonwealth Games. In 2012, at the Australian Olympic selection trials, he dominated the 50m and 100m freestyle events, setting personal bests. His 100m freestyle time of 47.10 seconds was then the fourth fastest in history and the fastest achieved in a textile suit. At the 2012 London Olympics, while favored to win, he earned a silver medal in the 100m freestyle, narrowly missing gold by 0.01 seconds, and a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay. He successfully defended his 100m freestyle world title in 2013 in Barcelona and continued to collect medals, including multiple gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, 2014, and 2018.

Magnussen retired from competitive swimming on June 5, 2019, with a total of 16 medals from major international competitions: eight gold, five silver, and three bronze. In 2024, he announced his intention to participate in the Enhanced Games, an event that allows performance-enhancing drugs, aiming to break the men’s 50m freestyle record. He has openly discussed his use of PEDs under medical supervision for this endeavor, detailing observed increases in strength and muscle mass. Beyond swimming, Magnussen has also appeared on Australian television reality programs like “SAS Australia” and “Dancing with the Stars.”
