Jim Rosenthal was born on November 6, 1947, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. His early life was rooted in Oxford, where his father, Albrecht Gabriel “Albi” Rosenthal, was a music scholar and antiquarian bookseller, and his mother was Maud Ruth (née Levy). Jim attended Josca’s Preparatory School and Magdalen College School before embarking on a career in journalism. He began his professional journey at the Oxford Mail in the late 1960s, a period where he gained practical experience by submitting sports reports. This early exposure to local journalism laid the foundation for his extensive career in broadcasting.
Rosenthal transitioned from print journalism to radio, working for BBC Radio Birmingham and later for BBC Radio 2’s Sports Unit between 1976 and 1980. His television career commenced in 1980 when he joined ITV, a partnership that would last for 28 years. During his tenure at ITV, he became a prominent figure in sports broadcasting, covering eight FIFA World Cups, three Rugby World Cups, two Olympic Games, and 150 Formula One races. He was also a key presenter for ITV’s boxing coverage, including “The Big Fight Live,” featuring major names like Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. He twice earned the Royal Television Society’s Sports Presenter of the Year award, notably for his role in ITV’s BAFTA-winning coverage of the 2003 Rugby World Cup where England secured victory.
Following his departure from ITV in 2008, Rosenthal continued his broadcasting work across various platforms. In 2010, he joined Channel 5 to front their Europa League football coverage. He became the lead presenter for boxing channel BoxNation in 2011 and has provided commentary for Channel 4’s Crufts coverage since 2014. More recently, he became the “Voice of JACK” for Oxfordshire’s JACK branded radio stations in 2019 and serves as a lead presenter for matchday coverage on Manchester United’s in-house channel, MUTV, as well as Amazon Prime’s Premier League coverage. In 2024, he was appointed to the board of directors for Northampton Town F.C., demonstrating his continued involvement in the world of sports.
