Born on December 10, 1988, in Bingerville, Ivory Coast, Wilfried Guemiand Bony embarked on his football journey playing street football before joining the Maracanã Bingerville football school. His early development continued at the Cyril Domoraud Academy from 2002 to 2005. Bony began his professional career at Issia Wazy, where he was the top goalscorer in the Ivorian top flight in 2007. After a trial with Liverpool in 2007, he moved to Sparta Prague, initially joining their B team on loan in October 2007 and winning the Bohemian Football League championship. He then transitioned to the main squad, playing a significant role in their 2009–10 Czech First League title win, scoring nine goals. His strong performance, including 17 goals in the first half of the 2010–11 season and five goals in the UEFA Europa League, led to his transfer to Dutch club Vitesse.
At Vitesse, Bony signed a three-and-a-half-year contract in January 2011 and quickly made an impact, scoring on his debut. He was the club’s top scorer in the Eredivisie in the 2011–12 season with 12 goals. His tenure at Vitesse culminated in a remarkable 2012–13 season where he emerged as the Eredivisie’s top scorer with 31 goals in 30 matches, earning him the Golden Shoe for the best player in the Netherlands. This prolific scoring record attracted attention from Premier League clubs, leading to his £12 million transfer to Swansea City in July 2013.
