James Christian Kimmel, born on November 13, 1967, in Brooklyn, New York City, grew up in Mill Basin before his family moved to Las Vegas when he was nine. Raised Catholic and an altar boy in his youth, Kimmel later attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for one year and Arizona State University for the 1985–86 academic year, leaving both without graduating. His early career began in radio, inspired by David Letterman. He hosted a Sunday night interview show on UNLV’s college station, KUNV, and later gained popularity as a caller to Arizona’s KZZP-FM. In 1989, he secured his first paid radio job as morning drive co-host of “The Me and Him Show” at KZOK-FM in Seattle. After being fired from multiple radio stations, Kimmel eventually landed at KROQ-FM in Los Angeles as “Jimmy The Sports Guy” for five years, where he befriended Adam Carolla.
Kimmel transitioned to television, initially writing for Fox announcers and promotions before being recruited for on-air roles. He co-hosted “Win Ben Stein’s Money” on Comedy Central from 1997 to 2000, where his quick wit complemented Ben Stein’s demeanor, earning them an Emmy for Best Game Show Host in 1999. In 1999, he also co-hosted and co-produced “The Man Show” with Adam Carolla, a show that achieved significant success on Comedy Central. This success led Kimmel, Carolla, and Daniel Kellison to form Jackhole Productions, through which they created and produced “Crank Yankers” for Comedy Central and later “The Andy Milonakis Show” for MTV2. Kimmel also co-wrote and produced the feature film “Windy City Heat.”
In January 2003, Kimmel permanently departed from “The Man Show” to launch “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC. Despite a slow start, the show gradually gained a substantial following by offering an edgy alternative to traditional late-night programming. Kimmel’s show became known for segments like “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” and “This Week in Unnecessary Censorship.” The show moved to an earlier time slot in 2013, directly competing with other major late-night programs. Over his career, Kimmel has hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards three times (2012, 2016, 2020) and the Academy Awards four times (2017, 2018, 2023, 2024). In 2018, Time magazine recognized him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Notably, in September 2025, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was briefly suspended by ABC following controversial comments made by Kimmel regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk, an event that sparked national debate on free speech.
