Jimmy Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur and webmaster, widely recognized as the co-founder of Wikipedia and Fandom. After pioneering the concept of open-source collaborative knowledge online, Jimmy Wales co-launched Wikipedia on January 15, 2001, adopting a wiki model that rapidly revolutionized information access globally. Prior to this groundbreaking endeavor, Wales began his entrepreneurial journey in 1994 as a financial trader with Chicago Options Associates, accumulating capital that fueled his transition into internet ventures. In 1996, he co-founded Bomis, a web portal, which provided the foundational support for his vision of an online encyclopedia.

Further recognition followed with the Mohammed bin Rashid Knowledge Award in 2014 and the Dan David Prize in 2015, celebrating his revolutionary work in information sharing. Expanding his professional portfolio beyond entrepreneurial ventures, Wales became a non-executive director of the Guardian Media Group in 2016 and received the President’s Medal of the British Academy in 2017. That same year, he launched WikiTribune, an online publication aimed at combining citizen journalism with professional editing. Continuing his commitment to open and ad-free information platforms, Wales launched the social network WT Social in 2019, focused on meaningful content sharing and community engagement without algorithmic manipulation.
