About

Joseph Lloyd Dombrowski was born on May 12, 1991, in Christiana, Delaware. He spent his formative years in Marshall, Virginia. Dombrowski began his athletic career in mountain biking in 2006, transitioning to cyclo-cross in 2007, and road racing in 2009. He attended George Mason University between 2009 and 2010. His professional cycling career began in 2011 with the UCI Continental team Trek–Livestrong, where he competed for two seasons. During the 2012 season, Dombrowski achieved significant results, including winning the Girobio, finishing fourth at the Tour of Utah, and placing tenth at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, demonstrating his abilities as a climber.

Dombrowski’s career progressed with a move to Team Sky, a UCI ProTeam, for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. During his tenure with Team Sky, he assisted teammate Chris Froome in various multi-day races. In 2014, he underwent iliac artery surgery. Following this, he joined Cannondale–Garmin, another UCI ProTeam, for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. While preparing for the 2015 Vuelta a España, he secured a victory at the Tour of Utah. He continued with the team, which became EF Education First, through 2019, where he won another stage in the Tour of Utah and achieved his best Grand Tour performance with a 12th-place overall finish in the Giro d’Italia.

In September 2019, Dombrowski signed a two-year contract with UAE Team Emirates. During the 2021 Giro d’Italia, he won stage four, marking his first victory in Europe since 2012. He subsequently held the blue jersey for the mountains classification after stage four and five but had to abandon the race due to a concussion following a crash. In October 2021, he joined Astana Qazaqstan Team for two years, continuing his professional cycling career until his retirement. Simultaneously, Joe Dombrowski, known as “Mr. D,” gained public recognition in 2017 with a viral April Fools’ Day spelling test prank, leading to multiple appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He is also a stand-up comedian, educator, and influencer, known for his show “Indoor Recess” and podcasts like “Social Studies.”
