Joe Gilgun established his acting career with his first television role in ‘Coronation Street,’ where he portrayed Jamie Armstrong from 1994 to 1997. Returning to full-time acting in 2006, Gilgun secured the role of Eli Dingle in the popular soap opera ‘Emmerdale,’ a character he played until 2010. Concurrently, 2006 marked his film debut in Shane Meadows’ critically acclaimed ‘This Is England,’ initiating a significant and enduring association with the franchise. Building on this success, Gilgun reprised his role as Woody in the highly regarded ‘This Is England’ television mini-series: ‘This Is England ’86’ (2010), ‘This Is England ’88’ (2011), and ‘This Is England ’90’ (2015).
His visibility significantly increased when he joined the ensemble cast of the BAFTA-winning E4 series ‘Misfits’ in 2011, taking on a lead role as Rudy Wade across 25 episodes until 2013. During this period, Gilgun also expanded his filmography with notable roles in ‘Harry Brown’ (2009), ‘Lockout’ (2012), ‘Pride’ (2014), ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ (2015), and ‘The Infiltrator’ (2016). Gilgun’s presence extended to American television when he starred as the charismatic vampire Cassidy in AMC’s hit series ‘Preacher’ from 2016 to 2019. His contributions to the series deepened as he also served as a co-executive producer for its later seasons.
