Charles Joel Nordström Kinnaman, known professionally as Joel Kinnaman, was born on November 25, 1979, in Stockholm, Sweden. He holds dual citizenship in Sweden and the United States. His early life included speaking both Swedish with his mother and English with his American father, who was a Vietnam War draftee and later a deserter from his base in Bangkok. Kinnaman initially entered acting as a child in the Swedish soap opera “Storstad” in 1990, portraying Felix Lundström for 22 episodes before taking a hiatus from acting. After graduating from Malmö Theatre Academy in 2007, he began working at the Gothenburg City Theatre, gaining attention for his role as Raskolnikov in a stage adaptation of “Crime and Punishment.” His breakthrough in Swedish cinema came with the 2010 film “Easy Money,” where his lead role as Johan “JW” Westlund earned him a Guldbagge Award for Best Actor.
Kinnaman’s career expanded into Hollywood, beginning with his international film debut in the thriller “The Darkest Hour” (2011). He gained significant recognition for his starring role as Detective Stephen Holder in the AMC television series “The Killing,” which ran from 2011 to 2014 across four seasons. In 2014, he took on the iconic role of Alex Murphy/RoboCop in the “RoboCop” remake. Further notable film roles include Rick Flag in the DC Comics films “Suicide Squad” (2016) and its 2021 sequel, “The Suicide Squad.”
In television, Kinnaman has taken on diverse roles in streaming productions. He portrayed Governor Will Conway in Seasons 4 and 5 of Netflix’s “House of Cards” (2016-2017) and the protagonist Takeshi Kovacs in the first season of Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” (2018-2020). From 2019, he starred as Edward Baldwin in the Apple TV+ science fiction drama series “For All Mankind,” which has seen him continue through subsequent seasons. His work demonstrates a consistent presence in high-profile projects across both Swedish and American entertainment platforms.
