About

Joel Sartore is an American photographer, speaker, author, teacher, and a long-time contributor to National Geographic magazine. He graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a degree in journalism. His fascination with nature began in childhood after learning about the last passenger pigeon from his mother’s Time-Life picture books. Sartore’s early assignments for National Geographic exposed him to nature photography and the initial impacts of human activity on the environment. His work has appeared in various publications such as Audubon Magazine, GEO, Time, Life, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. He has also been featured on national broadcasts including National Geographic’s Explorer, NBC Nightly News, NPR’s Weekend Edition, and an hour-long PBS documentary, ‘At Close Range.’

Sartore is the founder of The Photo Ark, a 25-year endeavor to document approximately 12,000 species residing in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries worldwide. He initiated this project in 2006 to raise awareness about the extinction crisis and to inspire global action for wildlife conservation. His unique approach involves capturing animal portraits against stark black or white backgrounds, emphasizing eye contact and intimacy to allow viewers to connect deeply with the subjects. The Photo Ark aims to photograph an estimated 20,000 species living in captivity, with Sartore having traveled to over 60 countries to capture these images. The project highlights the beauty of biodiversity and the urgent need to protect endangered species. In August 2024, the Photo Ark documented its 16,000th species, demonstrating significant progress towards its ambitious goal.

Throughout his career, Sartore has received recognition for his contributions to conservation photography. In 2018, he was awarded the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. He was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in 2021 and also received the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography from the Sierra Club the same year. In 2022, the U.S. Postal Service released a pane of 20 stamps featuring photographs from Sartore’s Photo Ark project, further extending the reach of his conservation message. He resides in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his family, continuing his work to advocate for wildlife.
