John William Lowery, professionally known as John 5, was born on July 31, 1970, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. His musical journey began at the age of seven, inspired by watching Buck Owens and Roy Clark’s television show “Hee Haw” with his father. He took guitar lessons from Detroit guitarist Robert Gillespie, learning classic blues and rock ‘n’ roll. At 17, Lowery moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a session guitarist. His early influences included The Monkees, Kiss, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen, and country music, which shaped his distinctive style.
Lowery’s career includes significant roles as a touring and recording guitarist for several high-profile acts. He gained widespread recognition as John 5 after joining Marilyn Manson’s band in 1998, a role he held until 2004. During this period, he contributed to albums such as “Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)” (2000) and “The Golden Age of Grotesque” (2003). After his departure from Marilyn Manson, Lowery began a long-standing collaboration with Rob Zombie in 2005, co-writing and performing on multiple albums including “Educated Horses” (2006) and “The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy” (2021). Parallel to his band work, John 5 has maintained a prolific solo career, releasing eleven instrumental albums, starting with “Vertigo” in 2004, showcasing his diverse instrumental talents.
In 2022, John 5 became the touring guitarist for Mötley Crüe, a position that transitioned to full membership in 2023.
