John Basedow began his career in New York as a television reporter on a nightly news program. He subsequently co-created the syndicated television show “Images.” Following his work in broadcast television, Basedow transitioned into the fitness industry. He appeared in fitness magazines and founded “Fitness Made Simple,” which evolved into a commercial enterprise. He developed and sold a series of direct-response television (DRTV) infomercials for his “Fitness Made Simple” routine.
Basedow authored the book “Fitness Made Simple: The Power to Change Your Body, the Power to Change Your Life,” published by McGraw-Hill. His business approach for the “Fitness Made Simple” infomercials involved prioritizing advertising frequency over the length of the advertisements, utilizing discounted unsold commercial inventory. This strategy contributed to the widespread recognition of his fitness program. Over time, changes in the television advertising landscape led to a decrease in the availability of such discounted airtime, impacting the viability of his commercial strategy.
In recent years, Basedow has focused on building a presence as a social media personality and motivational speaker. He launched various online series, including “John Basedow TV” on YouTube in 2007, “Lesbian Video Speed Dating” in 2011, and later “New Media Stew” and “Culture Pop,” which cover pop culture and celebrity news. His motivational “#WakeUpWords” videos, which promoted positivity and self-empowerment on Vine and Instagram, received media attention. Basedow has been a guest on television programs such as Viceland’s “The Untitled Action Bronson Show” and “Fuck, That’s Delicious,” and has served as a keynote speaker at events like the “I Am Success Summit.” In 2019, he launched “JB’s Fantastic Finds,” a live online auction on Facebook, supported by traditional television commercials as an innovative marketing strategy. In September 2024, he and his dog, Storm, were featured in the American Kennel Club’s magazine for their achievements in canine sports.
