John William DiMaggio was born on September 4, 1968, in North Plainfield, New Jersey. He attended North Plainfield High School, graduating in 1986, where he participated in theater productions. He continued his education at Rutgers University, majoring in theater, before pursuing a career in stand-up comedy. Early in his career, he performed as part of a comedy duo called “Red Johnny and the Round Guy” and gained on-screen acting experience in shows like “Chicago Hope” as Dr. Sean Underhill and playing Steve Ballmer in the docudrama “Pirates of Silicon Valley” in 1999.
DiMaggio’s career as a voice actor began in the mid-1990s, with one of his first roles being in “The Head” (1994-1996). His big break came with the role of Bender on the animated series “Futurama,” which premiered in 1999 and ran until 2003, and was later revived from 2008-2013, and again from 2023 to the present. He expanded his repertoire with another notable role as Jake the Dog in “Adventure Time,” which ran from 2010 to 2018. Over the years, DiMaggio has become recognized for his distinctive gruff voice, contributing to hundreds of characters across various media.
His extensive voice acting work includes roles in major franchises and productions such as Marcus Fenix in the “Gears of War” video game series (beginning in 2006), Dr. Drakken in “Kim Possible” (2002-2007), and King Zøg in “Disenchantment” (2018-2023). He has also lent his voice to characters in films like “Zootopia” (2016), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023), and the “Transformers” film franchise where he voiced Leadfoot (2011), Crosshairs (2014 & 2017), Nitro Zeus (2017), Stratosphere (2023), and Transit (2023).
