Allison Brooks Janney was born on November 19, 1959, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio. Her mother, Macy Brooks Putnam, was a former actress, and her father, Jervis Spencer Janney Jr., was a real estate developer and jazz musician. Janney initially pursued figure skating but an injury redirected her focus to acting. While studying at Kenyon College, where she majored in theatre, she was encouraged by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward to further her acting education. She subsequently trained at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Janney’s early career involved comedic roles in soap operas such as “As the World Turns” and “Guiding Light,” along with minor film appearances. Her breakthrough came with the role of C. J. Cregg on the acclaimed TV series “The West Wing” (1999–2006), where her performance as the President’s press secretary, who later became White House Chief of Staff, earned her four Primetime Emmy Awards and two SAG Awards. This period solidified her reputation and led to more significant roles in films like “The Hours” (2002) and “How to Deal” (2003).
Her career continued to thrive with diverse roles including Bren MacGuff in “Juno” (2007) and Bonnie Plunkett in the CBS sitcom “Mom” (2013–2021), for which she won two additional Primetime Emmys. A significant career highlight arrived in 2017 with her portrayal of LaVona Golden in “I, Tonya,” which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Janney also holds two Tony Award nominations for her work on Broadway, showcasing her versatility and sustained impact across all entertainment mediums.
