John H Stracey

John Henry Stracey was born on September 22, 1950, in Barking, England. His early boxing career began at the Repton Boxing Club in Bethnal Green, where his talent for the sport was quickly recognized. Stracey achieved significant success as an amateur, including winning the 1969 ABA Light-Welterweight Championship. He also represented Great Britain as a lightweight at the 1968 Summer Olympics, reaching the Round of 16. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his professional career.

Stracey turned professional on September 17, 1969, with a knockout victory over Santos Martins. He quickly established himself in the welterweight division, accumulating a series of wins. A notable turning point came on June 5, 1973, when he secured the British welterweight title by knocking out Bobby Arthur in the fourth round. This was followed by a significant achievement on May 27, 1974, when he claimed the European welterweight title by defeating Roger Menetrey via an eighth-round knockout in Paris. These victories positioned him for a world title opportunity.

The pinnacle of Stracey’s career arrived on December 6, 1975, when he challenged WBC welterweight champion José Nápoles in Mexico City. Despite being knocked down in the first round, Stracey recovered to win the world championship by technical knockout in the sixth round, marking a career-defining moment. He successfully defended his WBC title against Hedgemon Lewis on March 20, 1976. However, his reign ended on June 22, 1976, when he lost to Carlos Palomino. Stracey retired from professional boxing in May 1978 after a final victory against Georges Warusfel.
