About

John Hannah was born on April 23, 1962, in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the youngest of three children. His mother, Susan, worked as a cleaner, and his father, John, was a toolmaker. Before pursuing acting, Hannah completed a four-year apprenticeship as an electrician. He later transitioned to professional training, attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. After graduating from the academy, Hannah began his career with roles in theatre productions, films, and television, steadily building his experience and reputation within the industry.

Hannah achieved international recognition for his role as Matthew in the 1994 film “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” which earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. This breakthrough performance led to significant roles in other notable films such as “Sliding Doors” (1998), where he played James Hammerton, and “The Mummy” (1999), where he portrayed Jonathan Carnahan, a role he reprised in its sequels, “The Mummy Returns” (2001) and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (2008). In addition to his film work, Hannah has maintained a prolific television career, taking on leading roles in series such as Dr. Iain McCallum in “McCallum” (1995–1998) and D.I. John Rebus in “Rebus” (2000–2001).

His career further diversified with roles like Quintus Lentulus Batiatus in the critically acclaimed series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” (2010–2011) and its prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.” Hannah also became a series regular as Dr. Holden Radcliffe in Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (2016–2017). More recently, he has garnered recognition as the narrator for the BBC reality series “Race Across the World,” which began in 2019, and starred as Dr. Jed Bishop in the medical drama “Transplant” (2020). These roles demonstrate his broad acting range and consistent presence in both British and international productions.
