About

John George O’Hurley Jr. was born on October 9, 1954, in Kittery, Maine. He attended Natick High School and Kingswood-Oxford School before graduating from Providence College in 1976 with a BA in Theatre. Early in his career, O’Hurley appeared in numerous stage productions, including Broadway and national tours for “The Pirates of Penzance” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” He also gained early television experience through roles in several soap operas such as “The Edge of Night” (1983), “Loving” (1984–1986), “The Young and the Restless” (1989-1990), and “Santa Barbara” (1990–1991). These foundational experiences built a diverse acting background that prepared him for broader entertainment industry roles.

O’Hurley’s career breakthrough came with his portrayal of J. Peterman on the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld” from 1995 to 1998, a role that brought him widespread recognition and led to him becoming a part-owner and board member of the real J. Peterman Company in 1999. Beyond acting, he expanded into hosting, notably as the host of “To Tell the Truth” from 2000 to 2002 and “Family Feud” from 2006 to 2010. His versatility was further showcased as a contestant on the inaugural season of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2005, where he and his partner, Charlotte Jørgensen, reached the final. Following a viewer outcry after their initial loss, they participated in a special “grudge match” and were declared the winners, contributing to the show’s early popularity.

His extensive voice acting career includes roles such as King Neptune in “SpongeBob SquarePants” (2000–2025), Mayor Roger Doofenshmirtz in “Phineas and Ferb” (2008–2025), and Hades (voice) in “Monster High” (2023-2024). O’Hurley has also hosted the National Dog Show since 2002, becoming a familiar face during Thanksgiving telecasts. His theatrical work continued with lead roles in Broadway productions like “Spamalot” and “Chicago.” Additionally, he is an accomplished author, with books such as the New York Times best-seller “It’s Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump” (2006).
