Jon Bernthal was born Jonathan Edward Bernthal on September 20, 1976, in Washington D.C. His early life involved a period in Moscow, Russia, where he attended The Moscow Art Theatre School and played professional baseball. This unique background provided him with diverse experiences before he pursued further theatrical training. Upon returning to the United States, Bernthal was noticed by Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at the American Repertory Theatre, where he completed his M.F.A in 2002. Following his graduation, he immersed himself in the New York City theater scene, performing in over thirty regional and off-Broadway plays, many with his own company, Fovea Floods. He later relocated to Los Angeles in 2006, beginning his transition into screen acting.
Bernthal gained significant recognition for his role as Shane Walsh in the AMC horror drama series “The Walking Dead” (2010–2012), a performance that solidified his presence in popular television. His career continued to evolve with notable film roles in critically acclaimed productions such as Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) as Brad, David Ayer’s “Fury” (2014) as Grady ‘Coon-Ass’ Travis, and Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario” (2015). A pivotal moment in his career came with his portrayal of Frank Castle / The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in the second season of Netflix’s “Daredevil” (2016) before headlining his own spin-off series, “The Punisher” (2017–2019). His interpretation of the character earned widespread praise for its intensity and emotional depth. He will reprise this role in “Daredevil: Born Again” (2025).
Beyond his work in action and drama, Bernthal has demonstrated a wide range, including his critically acclaimed recurring guest role as Michael Berzatto in “The Bear” (2022–present), which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award.
