Jorge Luis Mateo was born on June 23, 1995, in Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic. Mateo began his professional baseball journey after signing with the New York Yankees on January 28, 2012, receiving a $250,000 signing bonus. His early career in the minor leagues showcased his emerging talent, particularly his speed, leading all minor leaguers in stolen bases in 2015 with 82 across Single-A Charleston and Single-A Tampa. During this period, he also recorded 23 doubles, 11 triples, and two home runs, demonstrating his developing offensive capabilities. He was recognized as the Yankees’ number one prospect by Baseball America following the 2015 season and earned FSL Mid-Season All-Star honors in 2016 for his continued strong performance with the Tampa Yankees.
Mateo made his MLB debut on August 13, 2020, with the San Diego Padres after being traded from the Oakland Athletics. While his batting average in his debut season was .185, his speed and defensive skills remained notable. A significant turning point in his career came with the Baltimore Orioles, who claimed him off waivers on August 5, 2021. In 2022, Mateo made his first Opening Day roster with the Orioles and achieved career highs in games (150), doubles (25), triples (7), home runs (13), and stolen bases (35). His 35 stolen bases led the American League and ranked second in MLB, establishing him as a prominent base stealer. For his defensive contributions, Mateo earned the Fielding Bible Award as the best defensive shortstop in MLB for the 2022 season, marking the first time an Orioles shortstop received this honor.
In the 2023 season, Mateo continued to showcase his speed, stealing 32 bases and becoming the sixth Oriole in team history to steal 30+ bases in back-to-back seasons. He appeared in all three games of the ALDS against the Texas Rangers, notably going 4-for-5 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Despite facing injuries in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, including a left elbow subluxation and hamstring strain, Mateo consistently maintained his high sprint speed, ranking in the 99th percentile in MLB.
