Jose Altuve, full name Jose Carlos Altuve, was born on May 6, 1990, in Maracay, Venezuela. He was signed by the Houston Astros as a 16-year-old non-drafted free agent on September 27, 2006. Initially overlooked due to his height, Altuve impressed scouts and was signed for $15,000, driven by a strong desire just to play baseball. His professional career began in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2007, and by 2011, after excelling in the minor leagues with teams like the Greeneville Astros, Lexington Legends, and Corpus Christi Hooks, he made his MLB debut for the Houston Astros on July 20, 2011.
Altuve quickly established himself in Major League Baseball, becoming the longest-tenured active member of the Houston Astros. A notable achievement includes winning the AL MVP award in 2017 while leading the league in batting average (.346) and hits (204). He has also been a two-time World Series champion with the Astros in 2017 and 2022. His consistent performance earned him seven Silver Slugger Awards, tying the record for second basemen in MLB history, and a Gold Glove Award in 2015. Altuve has been selected to nine MLB All-Star Games, the most for any Astro, and has been voted the starting second baseman six times.
Throughout his career, Altuve has demonstrated remarkable consistency and impact, highlighted by three AL batting titles and leading the American League in hits for four consecutive seasons from 2014-2017. He also led the AL in stolen bases in 2014 and 2015. Known for his contact hitting and durability, Altuve has accumulated over 2,000 hits, 400 doubles, 200 home runs, and 300 stolen bases, placing him in an elite group of MLB players.
