Josh Byrne

Josh Byrne was born on April 15, 1994, in New Westminster, British Columbia, to an Irish father and Trinidadian mother. He attended New Westminster Secondary School, where he excelled in lacrosse and hockey. His junior lacrosse career began with his hometown New Westminster Salmonbellies in the BC Junior A Lacrosse League. Byrne later played collegiately at ASA College and Nassau Community College before transferring to Hofstra University for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. During his two years at Hofstra, he scored 71 goals and recorded 40 assists for a total of 111 points in 29 games. He was recognized as an All-CAA first team selection in 2016 and served as a Hofstra captain in 2017.

Byrne was drafted first overall by the Burnaby Lakers in the 2016 Western Lacrosse Association draft, contributing 12 goals and 33 assists in 16 regular season games. In 2017, he was selected as the first overall pick in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry Draft by the Buffalo Bandits. His time with the Bandits includes leading the team to NLL Cup Finals appearances in 2019 and 2022, and winning the NLL Cup in 2023, 2024, and 2025. In 2024, Byrne achieved significant individual recognition, being named the NLL MVP, Finals MVP, and Offensive Player of the Year, alongside earning a First Team All-NLL selection.

In the field game, Byrne was drafted 19th overall by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the 2017 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft, playing for them in 2017 and 2018. Following the formation of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) in 2019, he joined Chaos Lacrosse Club, reaching the PLL Championship game in 2020 and 2022, and winning the league championship in 2021. In 2022, Byrne transitioned to Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) with the Six Nations Chiefs. Outside of his playing career, Byrne co-hosts “The Dhane and Josh Show” podcast with teammate Dhane Smith and has shown support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
