Juan Gonzalez

Juan Gonzalez, nicknamed “Juan Gone,” transitioned from a formidable Major League Baseball slugger to a respected coach and community advocate within Puerto Rico, leaving a significant impact through his two AL MVP awards and consistent offensive production. After earning the American Association’s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Awards in 1990 while playing for the Oklahoma City 89ers, Juan Gonzalez made his Major League debut with the Texas Rangers on September 1, 1989, having signed as an amateur free agent on May 30, 1986. Early in his career, Gonzalez demonstrated exceptional power, leading the American League in home runs with 43 in 1992 and 46 in 1993. During this period, he won his first of six Silver Slugger awards in 1992 and also claimed victory in the Home Run Derby at MLB All-Star Weekend in 1993, earning his first American League All-Star selection that same year.

His profound impact on the sport was further recognized with his induction into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2015. As a coach, Gonzalez has led the Puerto Rico National Baseball Team to considerable international success, securing a silver medal at the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He continued this trajectory, managing the team to gold medals at both the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 2019 Pan American Games, further solidifying his legacy as an impactful leader both on and off the field.
