About

Danny Granger Jr. was born on April 20, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana, where he was a four-year letterman in basketball, averaging 24.3 points, 12 rebounds, and 5.5 blocks per game as a senior. He was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and accepted to Yale University. For his college career, he initially played for Bradley, earning a spot on the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team in 2001-02. He later transferred to New Mexico, where he became a prominent player, leading the Lobos in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks for two consecutive years (2003-04, 2004-05). During his senior year, he was the only NCAA player to average at least 18.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 assists per game, earning First Team All-Mountain West Conference honors twice and being named MWC tournament MVP.

Granger’s professional journey began when he was drafted 17th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2005 NBA draft. He quickly made an impact, being named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2006. He steadily progressed, leading the Pacers in scoring for five consecutive seasons, reaching an average of 25.8 points per game in the 2008-09 season. This remarkable performance earned him an NBA All-Star selection and the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 2009. He also represented the United States, winning a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship. His career with the Pacers, where he signed a five-year, $60 million extension in 2008, established him as a cornerstone of the team.

Toward the later part of his career, Granger faced significant challenges due to injuries, including tendinosis of the left knee, which limited his playing time in the 2012-13 season. He was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014, then played briefly for the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat. His NBA playing career concluded after stints with the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons in 2015, largely due to ongoing knee and foot problems. Post-retirement, Granger leveraged his experience by building a real estate investment company and began working as a studio and game analyst for CBS Sports Network in 2017. That same year, he was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his collegiate athletic achievements.
