Justin Brooks Verlander was born on February 20, 1983, in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. His early baseball career began at Tuckahoe Little League in Richmond, Virginia, and he later attended Old Dominion University, playing college baseball for the Monarchs. During his collegiate career, he set Monarchs’ and Colonial Athletic Association’s career records for strikeouts, totaling 427 strikeouts in 335.2 innings with a career collegiate ERA of 2.57. His performance led to his selection with the second overall pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 2004 MLB draft. Verlander debuted with the Tigers in 2005. In 2006, he earned the AL Rookie of the Year Award, marking the start of a distinguished Major League career.
Verlander’s career is marked by numerous individual and team accolades. He won the AL Cy Young Award unanimously in 2011, a season in which he also achieved the pitching Triple Crown and was named AL MVP. Throughout his career, he has led the American League in strikeouts five times (2009, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2018) and wins four times (2009, 2011, 2019, 2022). He has pitched three no-hitters (2007, 2011, 2019), demonstrating his sustained dominance on the mound. Verlander has been a nine-time MLB All-Star and has participated in multiple World Series, securing championships in 2017 and 2022 with the Houston Astros.
After a lengthy tenure with the Detroit Tigers (2005–2017), Verlander was traded to the Houston Astros in 2017, where he played a pivotal role in their World Series victory and was named ALCS MVP. He continued to excel with the Astros, notably achieving his 200th career win and 2,500th strikeout in 2018, and his 3,000th strikeout in 2019. Despite missing significant time due to Tommy John surgery in 2020–2021, Verlander made a successful comeback in 2022, earning his third Cy Young Award and another World Series ring. He signed with the New York Mets in 2023, later returning to the Astros in the same year, and joined the San Francisco Giants in 2025. As of September 2025, Verlander is MLB’s active leader in career wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched, solidifying his status as one of baseball’s all-time great pitchers.
