Kakeru Nishiyama was born on August 20, 1995, and began practicing karate at the age of five in Okayama prefecture, following his father’s involvement in the sport. He was drawn to the discipline’s focus on silent and steady toughening exercises. Nishiyama progressed through local and national competitions before his international debut at the 2017 Karate 1-Series A in Okinawa, where he achieved a fifth-place finish. A significant turning point in his career involved training under Grandmaster Shigenori Sato, who taught him to utilize often overlooked body parts like the back and shoulder blade, which greatly enhanced his skills and results.

His career significantly advanced in 2019, when he secured a gold medal at the Karate 1-Series A in Istanbul, marking his first top international podium finish. Nishiyama has since accumulated eight gold medals in the Karate 1-Premier League, two continental titles, and a bronze medal at the World Championships. In 2023, he earned a bronze medal in the men’s individual kata event at the World Karate Championships in Budapest, Hungary. In 2024, he won his second consecutive Grand Winner award at the Karate 1 Premier League in Casablanca, securing gold at all three events that season and qualifying for the final. Nishiyama climbed to the number one position in the world rankings for kata and won a gold medal at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, in the men’s kata event.

Beyond his achievements in karate, Nishiyama also works as a firefighter, a demanding profession that he balances with his athletic career. He has frequently noted how the physical and mental discipline acquired through karate has been beneficial in his public service role.
