Kalyn Ponga was born on March 30, 1998, in Port Hedland, Western Australia. His early life involved relocations, first to Newman, Western Australia, then to Mount Isa, Queensland at age two. In 2006, at eight years old, his family moved to Palmerston North, New Zealand, where he engaged in multiple sports including rugby league, touch football, hockey, rugby union, golf, and soccer, notably winning New Zealand’s under-13 national golf championship in 2010. In 2011, Ponga’s family returned to Queensland, settling in Mackay, where he attended Mackay State High School and played junior rugby league for Souths Mackay. He was signed to a scholarship with the Central Queensland NRL bid side and was selected for the Australian Schoolboys under-15 side in 2012.
In 2013, Ponga moved to Brisbane, continuing his education at Anglican Church Grammar School, where he competed in rugby union. Concurrently, he played rugby league for the Easts Tigers in the Cyril Connell Cup and was re-selected for the Australian Schoolboys under-15 side. During this period, he also began playing Australian rules football and was identified as a prospect for the Brisbane Lions Academy. In December 2013, at the age of 15, Ponga signed a four-year contract with the North Queensland Cowboys, choosing this over offers from several other professional clubs across different sports. His dedication to rugby league saw him play for the North Queensland Cowboys Holden Cup team from 2015 to 2017, making 44 appearances and scoring 32 tries.
Ponga’s NRL debut came in 2016 for the Cowboys, and in 2018 he joined the Newcastle Knights, where he has since made significant contributions, including captaining the team. He has been a consistent representative player for Queensland in the State of Origin series since 2018. A notable achievement includes winning the 2023 Dally M Medal, recognizing him as the NRL’s Player of the Year, and being named Dally M Fullback of the Year in the same season. Ponga has consistently demonstrated his positional versatility throughout his career, playing fullback, five-eighth, and wing.
