Chad Allegra, widely recognized as Karl Anderson, was born on January 20, 1980, in Asheville, North Carolina. He spent his formative years in Pipestone, Minnesota, and initially attended Mars Hill College on a baseball scholarship before electing to pursue a career in professional wrestling. Anderson commenced his training under Les Thatcher at Main Event Pro Wrestling Camp in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2000. Following an injury, he continued his training at BoneKrushers, the wrestling school associated with the Northern Wrestling Federation (NWF), making his professional debut under his real name on May 10, 2002. His early career saw him compete against established wrestlers and participate in interpromotional feuds, including a title vs. title match between the NWF and Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) champions.
In October 2005, Anderson’s participation in the National Wrestling Alliance’s (NWA) annual convention led to an invitation to train at the NJPW LA Dojo. This marked a turning point in his career, where he was repackaged as “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson, adopting a new persona and signature moves. He quickly achieved success, winning the NWA British Commonwealth Championship. In 2007, he formed a tag team with Joey Ryan, known as the Real American Heroes, securing the NWA World Tag Team Championship. He also made his debut in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) in 2007, achieving victories over notable opponents and participating in tournaments. His tenure in PWG showcased his abilities before he departed in 2009, reflecting on the challenges of the Californian independent circuit while acknowledging the opportunities it provided.
Anderson’s career progressed significantly with his signing to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2008. He became a prominent figure in the tag team division, most notably as part of “Bad Intentions” with Giant Bernard, winning the IWGP Tag Team Championship and the GHC Tag Team Championship. He was also a founding member and a key orator for the influential Bullet Club stable. His career trajectory saw him move to WWE in 2016, where he twice won the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship alongside Luke Gallows. After a release in April 2020, he joined Impact Wrestling, securing the Impact World Tag Team Championship three times. Anderson returned to NJPW in 2021, winning the NEVER Openweight Championship. In October 2022, he returned to WWE while still holding the NEVER Openweight Championship, which he later defended and lost at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January 2023. His most recent departure from WWE in February 2025 led to a second return to NJPW and the independent circuit.
