Karolina Kurkova was born on February 28, 1984, in Decin, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). Her modeling career began at age 15 after a friend sent her pictures to a Prague modeling agency. This led to runway appearances and commercial work, and she later moved to Milan to gain further experience, securing a contract with Miuccia Prada. By age 17, Kurkova had moved to New York City and appeared on the cover of the American edition of Vogue in February 2001, a significant milestone that propelled her into the international fashion scene.
Following her Vogue cover, Kurkova became a prominent figure in haute couture fashion shows. She was selected by Victoria’s Secret for their 2000 fashion show webcast and worked with renowned fashion houses including Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Tommy Hilfiger, and Louis Vuitton. In 2002, she was named “Model of the Year” at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, recognizing her dedication to her craft. She continued to grace numerous international Vogue covers and worked with notable photographers like Steven Meisel and Mario Testino. In 2005, she became a Victoria’s Secret Angel, a role that further solidified her status in the industry and led to several high-profile appearances, including wearing the $6.5 million “Hearts On Fire” Fantasy Bra in the 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Beyond modeling, Kurkova ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (2009) and TV series including “Chuck,” “30 Rock,” and “Person of Interest.” She also served as a guest judge on “America’s Next Top Model” and “Germany’s Next Top Model.” In her entrepreneurial endeavors, she co-founded Gryph & IvyRose, a herbal care product line for children, and has engaged in various brand collaborations, such as with Cybex for baby products. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including being named one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 2004 and receiving a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” in 2007.
