Kat Perkins is a Scranton, North Dakota-based singer and songwriter. She competed in season 6 of The Voice and made it to the semi-finals of the competition. Scarlet Haze, a band from the Twin Cities, Minnesota, was fronted by Perkins and supported Bon Jovi at the Target Center in Minneapolis in 2005. Perkins subsequently underwent surgery on her vocal chords, which forced her to take a three-year break from singing. In 2013, Perkins and other musicians flew to the Middle East to entertain American military personnel.
After producers saw a video of Perkins singing Adele’s “Someone Like You” on YouTube, she was chosen to audition for The Voice season 6 in Los Angeles, California. Perkins was chosen for The Voice’s blind auditions in October 2013. At the television show’s blind audition, Perkins performed “Gold Dust Woman,” which piqued the judges’ attention. Her mentor was Adam Levine, who guided her to the semi-finals. Before being removed from The Voice in May 2014, Perkins was saved from elimination twice by audience votes via Twitter.
Perkins’ first single, “Fearless,” was released in August 2014. “Fearless” debuted in the top five on the iTunes rock chart the week after its release. “Fearless” also advanced to the first round of the Grammy Awards competition for “Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.” Perkins was inspired to compose the song after her experience on The Voice. Perkins and EduTech collaborated on the “Positive Social Media Tour” in September 2014 to visit schools around the United States to discuss social media with students and perform live. In October of 2014, she sang the national anthem at a Minnesota Vikings football game. Perkins has also founded The Rising Star Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships and opportunities for wannabe musicians while also giving back to the community.
