One of the BBC’s main national news broadcasters, Kate Silverton is an English journalist famous for presenting various programmes and news bulletins including BBC News at One, BBC Breakfast, BBC Weekend News, BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten. She has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan, and also presented various primetime BBC One programmes including Big Cat Diary on BBC One, has appeared as a mentor on BBC Two series The Speaker, and she has been a panellist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff. Silverton has presented several radio shows, including BBC Radio Four series Last Word and BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday mornings. Silverton has interviewed many famous names including Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and she also took part in series 16 of Strictly Come Dancing, reaching Week 9 with her professional dance partner Aljaz Skorjanec.
Born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, Silverton began her journalism career at the BBC on Look North news, also working for Tyne Tees Television before joining BBC News. Silverton began presenting BBC News 24 in 2005, also filling in as a relief presenter from time to time on BBC Breakfast. Despite an offer to present 5 News in 2007, Silverton has remained at the BBC, becoming a familiar face on UK television after presenting the channel’s various news programmes over nearly 15 years.
An accomplished writer, Silverton has written regularly about developmental psychology and mental health issues in children, adolescents and adults, and is now using her experience in journalism to raise awareness about emotional wellbeing issues.
