Born Ezekiel Brook on May 3, 1986, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Kell Brook began his amateur boxing career at age 12 under the guidance of Brendan Ingle. During his amateur years, he compiled a record of 31 wins from 36 fights, securing two Amateur Boxing Association of England titles, two National Association of Boys Clubs British Boxing Championships, and a gold medal in the 4 Nations. An early inspiration for Brook was Naseem Hamed, who also trained at the same Wincobank gym. Brook’s professional debut came in September 2004, where he secured a six-round points victory over Peter Buckley. He quickly accumulated a 5–0 record within four months and continued to build his experience against various journeymen fighters.
Brook achieved significant domestic success, capturing the British welterweight title in June 2008 with a seventh-round technical knockout against Barrie Jones. He successfully defended this title multiple times, including a first-round TKO against former champion Kevin McIntyre in November 2008 and a third-round TKO against Michael Lomax in July 2009, earning him the prestigious Lonsdale belt outright. In 2009, he was recognized as the Young British Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writer’s Club, winning by a single vote against Nathan Cleverly. By 2011, Brook had signed with Matchroom Sport under Eddie Hearn, further elevating his career.
His career pinnacle arrived in August 2014 when he defeated Shawn Porter to claim the IBF welterweight world title, a title he successfully defended three times against Jo Jo Dan (2015), Frankie Gavin (2015), and Kevin Bizier (2016). In September 2016, Brook moved up two weight divisions to challenge Gennady Golovkin for a unified middleweight world title, demonstrating his ambition despite suffering his first professional loss via fifth-round TKO. He later transitioned to light-middleweight, winning the vacant WBC Silver title in March 2018 by stopping Sergey Rabchenko in the second round. Brook officially announced his retirement from boxing in May 2022 after a career spanning nearly two decades, concluding with a notable victory over long-time rival Amir Khan in February 2022.
