After being drafted 38th overall in the second round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, Kelly Hrudey embarked on a distinguished professional ice hockey career. Before his National Hockey League debut, Hrudey honed his skills with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), earning a spot on the WHL Second All-Star Team during the 198081 season. His exceptional performance continued with the Islanders’ Central Hockey League (CHL) affiliate, the Indianapolis Checkers, where he was named to the CHL First All-Star Team in both 1982 and 1983.
In 2014, he moved to Sportsnet, expanding his broadcasting portfolio to include additional roles as a color commentator for the Calgary Flames regional broadcasts, further solidifying his position as a prominent sports media personality. Beyond his extensive hockey career, Hrudey is a dedicated mental health advocate, drawing upon his family’s personal experiences to raise awareness and support. His significant contributions to mental health initiatives were recognized by Mount Royal University, which awarded him an honorary degree in 2017. He continues to be a leading voice in both hockey analysis and mental health advocacy, leveraging his platform to impact audiences across North America.
