Kent Farrington, born on December 28, 1980, in Chicago, IL, began his equestrian journey at the age of eight, taking lessons at a stable specializing in carriage horses. His early career was marked by ‘catch-riding’ – demonstrating proficiency on unfamiliar horses for various professionals. This period honed his adaptability and skill, leading to significant achievements such as winning the Washington International Equitation Medal and the Eiser/Pessoa National Equitation Medal Finals during his junior years.
His professional career started to take shape at 18 when he secured a gold medal at the 1999 North American Young Riders International Competition. This launched his work with two-time US Olympian Leslie Howard. Farrington later earned the Maxine Beard Award, an honor given to American riders showing strong potential for international representation. His first Grand Prix win came in 2004 at Saugerties with his horse Madison, which subsequently earned the American Grandprix Association’s “Horse of the Year” title in 2005, the same year Farrington was recognized as “Trainer of the Year.” He continued his ascent, achieving a team gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and winning the 2011 King George V Gold Cup at CSIO Hickstead with his horse Uceko.
Over his career, Farrington has consistently demonstrated elite performance, achieving a team silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and a team bronze at the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games in Caen. He holds the distinction of being the first American to win the Rolex Top Ten Final (2015) and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Spruce Meadows (2017). His exceptional talent led to him being ranked World Number One on the FEI World Jumping Rankings from April 2017 to March 2018. As of 2024, Farrington continues to be a top earner in the sport, with annual prize money exceeding $1 million, showcasing a sustained record of success at the highest levels of international show jumping.
